WEB REVIEW – Proton therapy for Hodgkin lymphoma

Bradford S. Hoppe, radiation oncologist
Many patients with Hodgkin lymphoma suffer from late effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatment, including the possible onset of breast cancer or heart disease. Early evidence suggests proton therapy offers safer long-term results. A study by the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute (UFPTI) shows that the use of proton therapy following chemotherapy in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma has a success rate similar to the conventional treatments with a reduction of radiation outside of the target area, or “involved-node”, potentially reducing the risk of late effects caused by radiation. The study tracked 15 patients between September 2009 and June 2013 with newly diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma as they received involved-node proton therapy (INPT). The data shows... Full article

Secondary and recurrent cancers may be good candidates for protons

Anita Mahajan, MD, medical director at MD Anderson Proton Center in Houston, Texas.
For cancer survivors, cancer’s return can be a sudden, agonizing punch to the gut. And that’s especially true for patients whose cancer develops in the same area where the first cancer had been successfully treated with radiation. Physicians have a harder time using photon treatments a second time. They don’t want inadvertent radiation to re-injure adjacent tissues and organs — over and above the... Full article

Oregon teen gets handcrafted bow

Oregon teen gets handcrafted bow from Indiana group she befriended during proton treatments at IU A brown UPS truck had just departed from the Maupin household in Corvallis, Oregon. And Hannah Maupin was beaming as she carefully unwrapped the archery bow that had been custom made for her 2,300 miles away in Bloomington, Indiana. There, weeks earlier, Hannah had selected a piece of black walnut from a tree planted by... Full article

Love for music bonds teen with proton radiation technicians

Hannah 2
Music produced an instant connection between 13-year-old Hannah Maupin and her proton radiation technicians. They had cued up her iPod as Hannah climbed atop the treatment table for the very first time. And the voice of Rich Mullins, a contemporary Christian musician who had recorded albums in the 1980s and ’90s, leapt from the treatment room’s speakers. Some of the proton radiation techs looked at one another in... Full article
